KwaZulu-Natal police have praised a homeowner for notifying authorities about the discovery of a mortar bomb on a property in Winston Park, west of Durban.

On Monday, Captain Nqobile Gwala said the homeowner had been digging in his garden on Sunday when the bomb was discovered.

She said members of the Durban search and rescue (SAR) unit went out to the residence and identified the "suspicious object" as a mortar bomb.

"The Durban SAR explosives section members were notified and removed the mortar from the property for disposal," Gwala said.

She said a case docket hadn't been opened.

"The public is encouraged to report all suspicious objects immediately, whether on private or public property," Gwala added.
