Bolt to be in stands
Goal Coast: The second fastest man on the planet will have the fastest one cheering for him in the stands at Commonwealth Games' men's 100m finals, here on Monday. Yohan Blake, whose speed on the track is second only to Usain Bolt, will have his acclaimed countryman in the stands when he attempts to light up the athletics arena in the 100m final on Monday. "He should be flying in on the eighth or the ninth, one of them. I'm looking forward to it. This morning he messaged me on Instagram and said 'I believe in you'," Blake said after his semifinal run, which he topped with a timing of 10.06sec. Bolt retired at last year's World Championships in London, leaving a vaccum in the dope-tainted athletics arena that would be hard to fill in near future. The ongoing Commonwealth Games is the first major event to have a 100m final in the post-Bolt era. Former world champion Blake is being seen as one of the stars, who can perhaps be the clean face of international athletics. And he is quite enjoying the spotlight he is in.
Will you marry me?
An English basketball player stunned his girlfriend by proposing on-court at the Commonwealth Games -- but happily, she accepted. Jamell Anderson lured Georgia Jones, who plays for Englands women's team, to the centre of the court on Australia's Gold Coast with the help of team-mates. He then surprised her by getting down on one knee, producing an engagement ring and popping the question. "I had absolutely no idea," Jones, 28, said. "He told me I was just getting a picture taken." "Im just in shock," a tearful Jones added, struggling to articulate her emotions. "Im pretty speechless myself and I knew it was happening," said husband-to-be Anderson, 27. "Its been on my mind for a while. So now I can just play basketball." Anderson added.
Rare medal
They did it for themselves, their families and - most of all - their island. Norfolk Island, boasting just 18 athletes at these Commonwealth Games, won bronze in the lawn bowls men's triples competition Sunday and, fittingly, with some of their famous trees in the backdrop. It was just the second Commonwealth Games medal ever won by Norfolk, which boasts a population of less than 2,000 and just the one bowling rink. Ryan Dixon, Haydn Evans and Phillip Jones took a five-shot lead after the second end and were never headed by Canada to win 19-16. Watching from the stands was the island's only previous games medalist, Carmen Anderson, who won a bronze in the women's singles in 1994. Norfolk Islanders are proud of their unique culture and the lawn bowlers were chuffed to stand on a podium and watch the raising of their green and white flag that features the Norfolk Pine.
