Monday’s action at the 2018 Commonwealth Games got underway as India’s Pardeep Singh won a silver medal in men’s 105 kg weightlifting in Gold Coast. A short while later Jitu Rai clinched the men’s 10m air pistol gold while Om Mitharval took home the bronze in the same category. Then Mehuli Ghosh and Apurvi Chandela added to the tally as they won a silver and bronze respectively in the women’s 10m air rifle event. India won three gold, one silver and two bronze on Sunday – the gold medals coming in shooting through 16-year-old Manu Bhaker, in weightlifting by 22-year-old Punam Yadav and the women’s table tennis team competition. 13:20 hrs IST: Meanwhile Jitu Rai following his gold medal finish said: “Frankly speaking, my qualification score was not very good, but I had 100 percent faith in my ability that I can do it, because I have done well in the finals and won many medals in the past. My belief was unflinching. Two-three low scores pulled me down but then my belief helped me. That makes me really happy. So, I was confident of covering it in the finals and I never back off. So again, I am reaping the rewards of all the hard word work I have put in during training.”

13:16 hrs IST: A short while earlier, Indian shooter Smit Singh flunked in the men’s skeet final, finishing a disappointing sixth and last. Smit paid the price for a sluggish start and was the first to be eliminated from the six-man final after managing a lowly 15 out of 20. Georgios Achilleos of Cyprus clinched the gold, shooting a Commonwealth Games record total of 57 while the silver went to Ben Llewellin of Wales, with a total of 56. The New Zealander, whose participation was criticised as “unfair” by the Samoan team, lifted 120 kg but appeared to injure her arm after attempting 132 kg with her third effort. 10:25 hrs IST: Indian shooter Smit Singh qualified for the final of men’s skeet after shooting a total of 119 to find himself among the six qualifiers after the second day of qualifications. Earlier, on Sunday, Smit shot 46 after the first two rounds, finding himself at No.11. The Punjab shooter, however, lifted his game on Monday to shoot 25, 24 and 24 in the next three rounds and take his total to 119. It was however, curtains for Sheikh Sheeraz, who finished No.10 after firing a total of 117

10:20 hrs IST: India’s Lovely Choubey and Rupa Rani Tirkey beat Wales duo of Laura Daniels and Jessica Sims 20-16 in lawn bowls women’s pairs sectional play first round. The Indian pair started on slow pace but gathered momentum once the match progressed before turning the heat on the Wales duo. Meanwhile, in men’s singles sectional play first round, Krishna Xalxo beat Kenya’s Cephas Kimwaki Kimani 21-12 at Broadbeach. Krishna started on a confident note and kept his domination throughout the contest against the Kenyan, who found the going tough

10:15 hrs IST: Defending champion Chandela totalled 225.3 to finish third. Chandela had earlier smashed her own Commonwealth Games qualifying record from four years back by scoring 423.2. Chandela’s sequence of scores over four series in the qualifying read a very impressive 105.7 105.2 106.1 106.2 while Ghosh was fifth in qualifying with 413.7 following scores of 104.3 103.7 102.2 and 103.5 over four series. However, Ghosh, a bronze medallist in her maiden ISSF World Cup outing in Mexico last month, produced a better performance to topple her more experienced compatriot. Trained by Olympian Joydeep Karmakar, Ghosh showed her fighting abilities all through but fell short by just .4 in the end

10:10 hrs IST: Young Mehuli Ghosh settled for a silver medal after forcing a shoot-off in the women’s 10m air rifle event with a perfect final shot of 10.9 while Apurvi Chandela secured bronze. The 17-year Ghosh shot an excellent 10.9 to take the finals into a shoot-off with Singapore’s Martina Lindsay Veloso, the eventual gold medallist with a Games record of 247.2. Ghosh also aggregated a record 247.2 but a 9.9 in the shoot-off put paid to her hopes of claiming the top prize, as Veloso shot 10.3

10:02 hrs IST: Purnima Pandey, on the other hand, lifted 85 kg and 89 kg in her first two snatch attempts of women’s +90 kg weightlifting and will have one more chance before clean and jerk begin

09:06 hrs IST: National record holder Tejaswin Shankar today advanced to the high jump final after finishing ninth in the qualifying round. Shankar finished a joint fifth in Group A and ninth overall. The Indian cleared 2.21m in final analysis after starting out at 2.10m. None of the competitors in fray could touch the official mark set at 2.27m with 2.21m being the best effort by the top-12, who made the cut for the finals scheduled on April 14. The 21-year-old Shankar is a Youth Commonwealth Games gold medallist.He had qualified for the Games by claiming a national record of 2.28m during the Federation Cup last month. Among others who advanced were Australian cricketer Mitchell Starc’s younger brother Brandon Starc, a crowd favourite at today’s event

08:30 hrs IST: The Indian men’s table tennis team upstaged defending champions Singapore to enter the final. Following in the footsteps of the women’s team, which stunned Singapore to clinch its maiden gold at Commonwealth Games, the men’s team got the better of the Asian powerhouse 3-2. Veteran Gao Ning was the only one who managed to record singles victories for Singapore. The 35-year-old legend, a three-time gold medallist at CWG, defeated Harmeet Desai and G Sathiyan 3-0 and 3-1 respectively but the rest of his team fell apart against the Indians. India’s very own veteran star A Sharath Kamal won both his singles matches against Xue Jie Pang and Shao Feng Ethan Poh by similar margins of 3-0. In the doubles, the combination of Sathiyan and Desai rallied for a 3-1 win over Pang and Poh to clinch the issue for India

08:14 hrs IST: Star shooter Jitu Rai bagged a gold in shooting for India with a masterful performance in the men’s 10m air pistol event. Jitu created a new Commonwealth Games record of 235.1 in the final to win the gold. Kerry Bell of Australia took silver with 233.5 while Om Mitharwal bagged the bronze for India with 214.3

08:10 hrs IST: Indian swimmer Virdhawal Khade crashed out of his event. Khade registered 23.11 seconds in Heat 6 of the men’s 50 metre freestyle event. With the best 16 athletes progressing to the next phase, Khade’s time was not enough to keep him in competition. Benjamin Proud of England clocked the overall fastest time in the heats with 21.45 seconds

08:07 hrs IST: Pardeep Singh after winning the silver: “I have lifted a personal best of 215 kg in the past but may be it wasn’t my day. Whatever happens is God’s wish. It was meant to be a silver for me, so I ended up with that. I don’t know why it was declared invalid. As I said, perhaps it was meant to be a silver for me. Whatever happens, happens for a reason. If you ask me about motivation, there was none, I was just pushed into it by my family. Probably because my uncle was into it.”

08:05 hrs IST: Indian shooters Apurvi Chandela and Mehuli Ghosh have also entered the final of the women’s 10m air rifle event. Apurvi set a new CWG record of 423.2 to clinch the top spot in qualifying, beating her own previous record of 415.6 which was set at the 2014 edition in Glasgow. Ghosh registered 413.7 to finish fifth in the qualification stage

08:03 hrs IST: Jitu Rai wins men’s 10m air pistol gold, Om Mitharval bronze

08:02 hrs IST: Indian weightlifter Pardeep Singh (105 kg) came agonisingly close to a gold but eventually settled for a silver after a close contest with Samoa’s Sanele Mao. Singh, the reigning Commonwealth Championships gold medallist, lifted a total of 352 kg (152 kg+200 kg) to claim second spot after an exciting showdown with Mao, which had the packed arena on its feet. The 23-year-old went for 211 kg lift, which would have been a new Commonwealth and Games record in clean and jerk, but could not pull it off in his final attempt. His second attempt at 209 kg was declared invalid by the jury despite getting the judges’ nod as his elbow had pressed out. Mao also dropped his final attempt of 211 kg but had managed to lift 206 kg in his second chance. He finished with a total of 360 kg (154 kg+206 kg). The bronze went to England’s Owen Boxall (351kg (152kg+199kg)

08:00 hrs IST: Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj crashed out of the men’s 200 metre backstroke event after finishing sixth in Heat 2. Srihari clocked 2 minutes and 4.75 seconds to finish at a disappointing sixth position out of the seven competitors in Heat 2. He finished a whopping 6.83 seconds behind South Africa’s Martin Binedell who clocked 1:57.92 to win Heat 2. Binedell also claimed the overall top position after the completion of all the three heats

07:55 hrs IST: But Hima Das managed to qualify for the semi-finals after finishing third in her heat. She clocked 52.11 seconds

07:52 hrs IST: India’s Poovamma Raju finished fifth in Heat 1 of the women’s 400 metres event but failed to qualify for the semi-finals. Poovamma clocked 53.72 seconds to finish 0.175 seconds behind Botswana’s Amantle Montsho, who registered 51.20 to take the top spot. The top four runners in each of the heats earn a direct spot in the semi-finals. Poovamma still has a chance to reach the next stage as the four fastest athletes outside the top four are also allowed into the semi-finals. However, she will now have to wait for the results of the other four heats later in the day

07:47 hrs IST: Indian shooter Om Mitharval equalled the Commonwealth Games (CWG) record on his way to qualifying for the final of the men’s 10m air pistol event. Om shot 584 in the qualifying round to equal the meet record set by fellow Indian Samaresh Jung at the 2006 CWG in Melbourne. Jitu Rai, the other Indian in the fray, also reached the final. Jitu had score of 570

07:40 hrs IST: India’s total medals tally is now up to 13 with seven gold, three silver and three bronze medals. India are currently fourth in the standings behind Australia, England and Canada
