Directs officials to take up infrastructure projects after residents complain about lack of facilities

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi visisted Chettipet village on Saturday where she reviewed the progress of the construction of a bed dam across Sankarabarani river to raise the groundwater level in the area. The L-G also held an interaction with the villagers on ways to develop the economy of the village.

Local MLA T.P.R. Selvan, several residents from the village, and officers from the Public Works Department, agriculture, forest and rural development departments, police and commune commissioner were present. Art of Living representative Thayalnayaki introduced to the villagers their programmes of inculcating values among the youth and imbibing the spirit of responsible citizenship.

Ms. Bedi, in a press release stated that during the visit, the farmers requested for a ‘kacha road’ along the river bed to transport the farm produce.

The L-G directed the department concerned to take up the road laying work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), if it is permitted under scheme guidelines.

She also directed the officials to expedite construction of individual household toilets by availing schemes under the District Rural Development Agency in the village and to declare the village open defecation free by June 2018.

“The villagers requested for a dining shed for the government primary school in the village, which was also resolved to be constructed under MNREGA,” she said.

‘Protect fields’

Ms. Bedi advised the Forest department to take preventive measures to keep wild boars away from crops to prevent destruction of valuable agricultural produce. The youth in the village were informed about the vocational skill training programme offered by the Labour Department.

She directed the Commune Panchayat Commissioner to educate the villagers on the need for segregation of waste into organic and plastic for efficient waste disposal. She instructed them to reopen the two closed government libraries and set up a village administrative office.
