So excellent a king…” It’s hard not to be in a Hamlet-y mood today on seeing that the 2018 Olivier Awards spectacularly failed to pay respects in its “In Memoriam” section to Sir Peter Hall, who died in September last year. 

Without whom none of this would have been possible? Well, not quite, but when you remember the battles that Hall fought to get the National up and running on the South Bank, you wonder whether the invitees at the Royal Albert Hall last night would have been applauding Follies, Network and Angels in America without all that indefatigable input of his back in the day.
