Anas tops 400m heat; Miller wins hammer gold

Tejinder Singh made it to the final of the men’s shot put with a throw of 19.10m while Muhammed Anas won the 400m semifinal with a time of 45.98s as the athletics events began at the Carrara Stadium here on Sunday.

In 20km walk, Manish Singh, who finished fifth, was disqualified for unsporting conduct, while K.T. Irfan was 13th (1:27:34). Australia’s Dane Bird-Smith emerged winner in 1:19:34, ahead of England’s Tom Bosworth (1:19:38) and Kenya’s Samuel Ireri Gathimba (1:19.51).

In the women’s section, Soumya Baby found herself among those disqualified, while Kushbir Kaur took the fourth spot (1:39:21). Jemima Motang completed a double for Australia, winning in 1:32:50. Alana Barber (NZ) took the silver in 1:34:18 while Bethan Davies (Wales) bagged the bronze (1:36:08).

In the men’s 5000m final, which produced the slowest timing in Commonwealth Games history, Joshua Cheptegei (Uganda) out-kicked Mohammed Ahmed (Canada), leading into the final lap, to win in 13:50.83.

Ahmed finished in 13:52.78, while the bronze went to Kenyan 16-year-old Edward Pingua Zakayo (13:54.06).

Earlier, Nick Miller (England) upgraded his Glasgow hammer throw silver to gold with a Games and National record of 80.26m.

Matty Denny (Australia) took silver with a personal best of 74.88m leaving Mark Dry (Scotland) third with an effort of 73.12m.
