Gaighat, April 7
Wards 1 and 2 of Belaka Municipality in Udayapur have started installing electric fence to prevent wild animals from entering human settlements.
The municipality devised the plan after elephants, wild buffaloes, boars, monkeys and deer, among other animals, from Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve and its adjoining areas started straying into human settlements and attacked locals, besides damaging crops, especially in wards 1 and 2, said Mayor Durga Thapa.
“The only demand of the locals was to control the invasion of wild animals that caused a huge loss to farmers by destroying their crops. Hence, we came up with the idea of installing electric fence,” said Mayor Thapa.
Tapeshwori, Purandaha, Bhagalpur, Ramnagar, Karaiya, Tallo Belaha, Bandanda and Galfadiya are the worst hit due to invasion of wild beasts.
