Swimming in lane 5, Le Clos was caught on the line by Duncan Scott (Scotland) who stopped the clock in a time of 48.02.

Le Clos, who led the whole race until the end, finished in 48.15 with Kyle Chalmers recording exactly the same time as the two swimmers tied for silver.

Team South Africa added another medal to their tally thanks to Colleen Piketh who took bronze in the bowls singles.

After a brief rest following his medal exploits, Le Clos was back in the water to qualify for the 100m butterfly final in a time of 52.56.

Tatjana Schoenmaker set herself up for a chance at another gold medal after she won her semi-final heat in the women's 100m breastroke in 1:06.65, a personal best.

In other action in the pool, Erin Gallagher swam to a new African record as she qualified for the 50m freestyle final in a time of 54.38, the 7th fastest time on the night.

South Africa will have three swimmers contesting the men's 50m breastroke final with Cameron van der Burgh (26.95), Michael Houlie (27.64) and Brad Tandy (27.99) qualifying with the 2nd, 5th and 8th fastest times respectively.

Adam Peaty of Great Britain remains the man to beat, however, after he broke the Games record with a 26.49.
