Weightlifter Punam Yadav’s began India’s campaign on a brilliant note on Sunday when she won the women’s 69 kg gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. India’s medal bag swelled further when Manu Bhaker won the women’s 10m air pistol gold with Heena Sidhu taking silver. The fourth day of competitions at the XXI Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast will see as many as 31 medals decided across eight sports events – athletics, track cycling, gymnastics, swimming, shooting, table tennis and weightlifting. It will be another big day for India, who will look to add more gold in weightlifting as well as shooting and athletics. In weightlifting, India are expected to win more medals via Seema (75 kg) and Vikas Thakur (94 kg). 08:10 hrs IST: Veteran Indian boxer MC Mary Kom entered the semi-finals of the women’s 48 kg with a convincing victory over Megan Gordon of Scotland. The five-time world champion dominated her 18-year-old opponent throughout the one-sided quarter-final to claim a unanimous 5-0 verdict at the Oxenford Boxing Studios. Yadav, a bronze-medallist from the 2014 Glasgow edition, lifted 222 kg (110 kg + 122 kg) to claim gold ahead of England’s Sarah Davies, who finished with 217 kg (95 kg+122 kg). 07:45 hrs IST: India’s Manish Singh and Irfan Kolothum Thodi registered disappointing performances in the men’s 20 kilometre race walk. Manish registered a time of 1 hour, 22 minutes and 22 seconds to take sixth spot. Irfan was even more disappointing, clocking 1:27:34 to finish 13th in a field of 15 athletes. Dane Bird-Smith of Australia claimed the title with a time of 1:19:34. He had to beat off a tough challenge from England’s Tom Bosworth who took the silver medal with 1:19:38. Samuel Ireri Gathimba got the bronze for athletics powerhouse Kenya with a time of 1:19:51

07:41 hrs IST: Indian shooters Manu Bhaker and Heena Sidhu qualified for the final of the women’s 10m Air Pistol event. The Indian shooters dominated the qualification stage, claiming the top two spots going into the final. Manu topped qualification with a total of 388 points. Heena qualified in second spot with 379 points

In shooting, women’s air pistol hopes will be on Heena Sidhu and teenager Manu Bhaker, in women’s skeet (Saniya Shaikh, Maheshwari Chauhan) and men’s 10m air rifle (Ravi Kumar, Deepak Kumar).

In athletics, India pin medal hopes on their 20km race walkers (KT Irfan and Manish Rawat; Kushbir Kaur and Soumya Baby).

In table tennis women’s team event, India take on England in the semi-final, and if they win, they will battle for gold against Australia or Singapore.

Swimming, the feature event of the games, will see as many as eight gold medals decided.

Hosts Australia led the medals table with 57 medals, 20 of them gold, after Saturday’s events. India were fourth with four gold, one silver and one bronze.
