Elders’ club convention in June

National-level meet to be held in Hyderabad

In a world where the elderly are seldom cared for, the soon-to-be launched Elders Club International here has resolved to bring together pensioners, retired employees and other senior citizens on a common platform to discuss their issues and needs. A national-level convention for the elderly is slated to be convened in Hyderabad from June 15 to 17.

Participating in the preparatory meeting on Sunday, Elders’ Club State chairman Mandati Krishna Reddy said over 90% of senior citizens were leading a miserable life with a range of health, psychological and financial issues. The club aims to provide some relief to them by offering a platform to address their grievances, he added.

He also pointed out that the United Nations had suggested addressing senior citizens as ‘elders’ and utilising their services for the betterment of society considering their experience in various fields.

Mr. Reddy said the club would come to the rescue of elders in case of any problem raised on a WhatsApp group and Twitter account that would soon be launched. It would also ensure a respectable cremation for the deceased elders through arrangements made by contribution of the club members.

Senior citizens’ association state president and DCCB vice chairman P. Mohan Reddy urged the government to provide 50% concession to elders for RTC, railways and air travel. Lok Satta district president N. Srinivas and Indian Red Cross Society state vice-president S. Balakrishna were among those who participated in the meeting.
