Mumbai: Week into cracking down on extortionists, builder gets threat call from RTI activists

MUMBAI: Despite the police cracking down on extortionists using RTI since over a week, a 28 -year-old Virar builder was threatened for money on Friday.

The police has registered a case against four RTI activists, one has been arrested.


The accused men sought information of alleged illegal construction of a four storey building by the builder in Virar ( east). They threatened to complain to the municipality and demolish the structure if he did not pay Rs 15 lakhs.


The builder in his complaint stated that he had been getting threats since 2017 but he ignored it. On Friday despite the police cracking down on extortionists in the region, the four activists called and threatened him for the money.


So far 10 FIRs have been filed against politicians and RTI activists in various police stations in the region. Most of the accused including a Shiv Sena Nalasopara Corporator Dhananjay Gawde and Vasai Virar NCP chief Govind Gunjalkar are absconding.
