Playing the IPL after a gap of two seasons, Chennai made a winning returning to the league, beating the defending champions Mumbai Indians by one wicket in the Indian Premier League opener. Chasing a total of 166, Chennai were in trouble with 7 down in the 15th over but then Dwayne Bravo scored a fifty and brought them back. They needed 27 off two overs when Bravo, single-handedly made it 7 needed off 7 balls. He was dismissed at this moment. Kedar Jadhav, injured due to a hamstring, came in to bat and hit a six off the fourth ball of the final over and then a four to seal the game.
