The trail persists as chains, handbag snatched in city

One offender was nabbed after he fell off bike in T. Nagar

Raj Kiran, 23, who snatched a handbag, was nabbed by the public after he fell from a bike as the 25-year-old woman held on to her bag in T. Nagar on Wednesday night.

Vijaya, a resident of Nungambakkam, who works for a private company, was walking past Natesan Park on Venkatnarayana Road along with her friend. Three bike-borne men passed by and one pillion rider tried the act. In the process of yanking the bag, he fell down. The public gathered and held him down.

β€œHe was returning from a bar in the locality. He requested two men, whom he met in the bar, to drop him near his house. On the way, he tried to snatch the bag. Seeing him fall, the other two sped away,” said a police officer.

Chain snatching

Meanwhile, two cases of chain snatching were reported in the city. In one, the suspect pushed the woman down on the road before fleeing.

Devi, 45, of Nungambakkam was walking on Thirumalai Pillai Road in T. Nagar. A youngster, who was walking behind her, snatched her chain. An accomplice on a bike came up, he hopped on and sped away.

Elsewhere, Saroja, 52, wife of Rajendran, residing in North Colony, ICF, was walking on Chennai Pattai Road on Thursday evening when two men on a bike snatched her five-sovereign chain and sped away. The police are checking CCTV footage to identify the suspects.
