Man City 2 Man Utd 3: Smalling and Pogba spoil the Etihad party

Apr 7, 2018

Manchester City will have to wait to secure the Premier League title

Manchester United staged a stunning comeback to beat Manchester City 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium - and denied their rivals securing the Premier League title.

City went into the match knowing that three points would confirm them as Premier League champions. In the derby captain Vincent Kompany gave City the best possible start when he headed the opening goal after 25 minutes.

Then five minutes later Ilkay Gundogan doubled City’s lead. The home fans were in dreamland and City should have extended their lead before half-time but Raheem Sterling failed to hit the target with two guilt-edged chances.

Going into the break 2-0 down United were rattled, but the visitors came out in the second-half a different team.

Paul Pogba scored two in two minutes to bring them level and after 69 minutes they were in front when Chris Smalling volleyed home from close range.

City could have equalised late on but Sergio Aguero’s header was superbly saved by United keeper David de Gea and the visitors held on for the win.

United’s victory has only delayed City from winning the Premier League for a few more weeks.

After the match United boss Jose Mourinho congratulated his rivals. He said: “Our challenge is to finish second but I want to congratulate City for the title because they are going to win and deservedly. They gave no chance to the others because they had this season of don’t stop winning.

“My objective here was to get points and not spoil any celebrations. The point is can we improve enough to catch them next season?”
