Cops sent to district lines for ‘inappropriate conduct’

Allegedly misbehaved with 5 youths in Vasant Kunj mall

Two policemen posted at city’s Vasant Kunj (North) police station have been sent to district lines for allegedly assaulting and misbehaving with five persons, including two women, at Vasant Square Mall in Vasant Kunj on Thursday evening, the police said on Friday.

The victims complained at Vasant Kunj (North) police station. They claimed that three policemen misbehaved with them without provocation while they were sitting inside the mall’s lower-ground floor around 7.30 p.m. However, the role of the third accused is unclear, the police said.

Victim Rajesh Kumar said, “I was with Manish Uniyal, Rajesh Vaid and two female friends at the mall when three policemen suddenly started questioning us. They abused and thrashed us when we objected to their behaviour. They also searched our bags. They left the women alone when we questioned the absence of women constables.”

‘Inebriated’

The victims claimed they were illegally detained at the police post and thrashed by the accused. They alleged that the trio were in uniform and in an inebriated state at the time of incident.

“They tortured us for an hour, brought us to the beat box and forced us write an application they dictated. They seized our bags, which had a laptop and other belongings,” Mr. Kumar added.

“The victims claimed that when they they asked why they were being questioned like criminals, the three policemen including an assistant sub-inspector [ASI] and head constable started abusing them,” an officer said.

Reacting, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Milind Dumbere said primary investigation had revealed that the conduct of ASI Bijender and head constable Manvir was inappropriate and both have been sent to district lines.

“The matter was probed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Vasant Kunj, and is being probed further. Further action will be taken if needed,” he said.
