Karuna students seek govt cover

Thirty students of Karuna Medical College, Palakkad, who face an uncertain future after the Supreme Court stayed an ordinance validating their MBBS admissions will implead themselves in the case in the apex court.

Student representatives Akshay Kumar, Nithin Thomas, and Fazal Firoz told a press meet here on Saturday that they were confident of getting justice as the court itself had permitted them to implead in the case.

The students, who reached the Palakkad Press Club along with their parents, said they were caught in the tussle between the college management and the government. They said MBBS admission supervisory committee led by J.M. James and Health Secretary Rajiv Sadanandan were responsible for the situation.

The students and their parents turned emotional, claiming they had all the required qualifications to seek MBBS admission.

“We are confident that our case can be properly argued and won in the court. So far, we were not part of the litigation and nobody wanted to hear our version. We were kept in the dark by the management and the government,” they said.

They claimed they got admission without paying capitation fee or bribe to the college management.

“We hope the management too will implead itself in the case to protect our future. The government has the liability to protect our future,” the students said.

Meanwhile, a march organised by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha to the college turned violent.
