Initiative to clean canals in Alappuzha

A joint initiative to clean canals in Alappuzha will commence on Monday.

Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said on Saturday that the Irrigation Department, Kerala Pollution Control Board, Alappuzha municipality and Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanad would be part of the effort.

β€œIn the first phase, small canals will be cleaned. The drive will be started by cleaning the 1,600-metre-long Chathanad canal. Plastic waste collected from the canals will be recycled,” Dr. Isaac said.

Around 300 students pursuing engineering, social sciences, urban planning and architecture from across India will participate a summer school in May. Its aim is to conduct a feasibility study for the rejuvenation of major canals in Alappuzha.
