14 bull tamers injured in jallikattu

A total of 14 persons suffered minor injuries at the jallikattu held in Devarayapuram village, near Erumapatti, on Saturday.

The event, which attracted 357 bulls from different parts of the State, was inaugurated by Ministers P. Thangamani (Electricity), and V. Saroja (Social Welfare) in the presence of M. Asia Mariam, District Collector, and Ara Arularasu, Superintendent of Police.

A total of 249 bull tamers, divided into three groups, attempted to tame the bulls in the spacious play area as soon as they were released through the ‘vaadi vaasal’ and those who were successful in their attempt were given cot, mixers, cookers, gold and silver coins, silver pots etc as prizes. The owners of the bulls, which gave a slip to the tamers, were also honoured with prizes.

Fourteen bull tamers, who suffered injuries, were given first aid at the venue itself. Some of them were referred to the government headquarters hospital in Namakkal town.

The police had made all security arrangements for the event.
