A week after the single deadliest day — March 30 — in the Israel-Palestine conflict since the 2014 Gaza war when 16 Palestinians were killed, violence has spiralled. On Friday, April 6, Reuters reported that Israeli troops had shot dead seven more Palestinian protesters and wounded at least 200 along the Israel-Gaza border, raising the death toll to 27.

Thousands of Palestinians had marched to the border at the start of a six-week protest, dubbed ‘The Great March of Return,’ ahead of the 70th anniversary of the founding of Israel. According to the BBC, Israel Army’s Brig Gen. Ronen Manelis told journalists that it could take action against “terrorist targets” inside the Gaza strip, pointing the finger at Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza. The UN Secretary-General called for an independent inquiry into last Friday’s violence.
