Sixers' Embiid (head) progressing; still no timetable for return
Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is progressing in his recovery from surgery last week to repair the fractured orbital bone around his left eye, but there is still no timetable for his return.
The Sixers said Friday that the 24-year-old was cleared of having a concussion by an independent neurologist earlier this week and will now begin the non-contact cardiovascular workout steps required to complete the NBA's concussion protocol.
"Joel Embiid underwent a post-operative examination by Dr. Jurij R. Bilyk and Dr. Howard Krein following successful surgery last Saturday to address the fractured orbital bone in his left eye," the team's said in a statement. "The surgeons were pleased with how the affected area is presenting to date and will determine when it is safe and medically advisable for Embiid to return to play."
Embiid was originally diagnosed with facial contusions following a collision with rookie guard Markelle Fultz in a March 28 win over the New York Knicks.
The 76ers, riding a 13-game winning streak, reportedly believe Embiid can return early in the Eastern Conference playoffs. The regular season ends April 11, and the team's first playoff game will be either April 14 or 15.
Embiid is averaging 22.9 points and 11.0 rebounds in 63 games.
