NPU launches CBCS

The much-awaited choice-based credit system (CBCS) will finally take off in the colleges of the NP University.

A decision to this effect was unanimously taken in April 5 meeting of colleges’ professors in charge, principals, heads of university departments, deans and officials of the university under the chairmanship of the VC NPU S N Singh.

The launching of CBCS was in limbo since 2016 -17 here. NPU Vice Chancellor S N Singh said that the university is a late starter of this system at UG level in colleges here.

The university did not build up any pressure on any college for this rather the colleges were given a free hand to choose their course of action but in April 5 meeting there was the unanimity of decision among the colleges to launch this CBCS at UG level from the coming session 2018 -19 which begins this June reiterated VC.

The CBCS has its merit and challenges both. Speaking about challenges the VC said most of the degree colleges suffer from acute crunch of subject teachers and there holding CBCS is a difficult proposition.

Again colleges will now have to conduct 30 marks internal examination where concerned subject teachers are to set questions, hold examination, evaluate answer books,  announce marks, preserve folios of marks till the final pass out of the students and all these works are too enormous for teachers who till recently have had nice time in colleges asserted VC.

As for benefit to students VC said there will be promotional door open to students who fail in semester examination with the rider that a student must clear 50 per cent of the courses in one semester.

Singh said a semester of 4 courses will require passing at least in two of it but if a student fails in 3 of the 4 courses then promotion in second semester will be held up till its clearance. Academic backlogs will be eased if a student returns to his course sincerely reiterated the VC.

The university will be holding 70 marks 6 semester examinations for a complete passing out as a graduate along with colleges doing it 6 times for 30 marks internal examination.

Here a student can do well in his 30 marks worth internal examination, as marks obtained by student in this internal examination will get added to university’s 70 marks examination and that may make a difference in his class/ division at the end of the degree course reminded VC. Priyanka Kumari an English honours student of YSNM college has welcomed this CBCS saying this system enables a student to pursue his /her ability enhancement course as well like a science student going for English communicational ability course.
