President Trump has proposed to add a question regarding citizenship to our Census commencing in 2020. Although the Census provides vital information about the people who live in our country, adding a question about citizenship is not necessary to its overall purpose.
Adding this question would single out every non-citizen in the country and cause turmoil. Some people may hesitate to participate in the Census due to fear of deportation. This is a very sensitive subject given the new restrictions on immigration implemented by President Trump.
Trump’s proposal, therefore, would hinder any chances of achieving a balanced political representation.
