Weightlifter Sathish Kumar Sivalingam gave India a brilliant start after winning a gold medal in men’s 77 kg at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. Later in the day, Ragala Venkat Rahul also clinched a gold, this time in men’s 85 kg. In Boxing Sarita Devi, Manoj Kumar and Hussamuddin Mohammed entered the quarters in their respective categories. The Indian badminton outfit entered the semi-finals of the mixed team event. Meanwhile, the Indian hockey team slipped from a winning position to draw 2-2 against rivals Pakistan in their group opener. The Indian men’s and women’s table tennis teams progressed to the semi-finals too after defeating Malaysia 3-0 in their respective matches. In squash it wasn’t good news as Joshna Chinappa was ousted in the quarters. While Aruna totalled 44.400 after her four rotations, Pranati’s final score was 43.900 at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre. Aruna scored 13.650 in her favourite apparatus vault while scoring 10.200 in uneven bars, 9.000 in balance beam, 11.550 in floor exercise. 09:07 hrs IST: Satish said he felt the absence of a physio inside the warm-up area more because with his struggles with injury. “There is not much support there though the coaches are trying their best but that is not the same as a physio doing that. I felt my legs loosen a bit, the back was loose because taping was not correct but I managed to overcome,” said Satish, who dedicated his medal to his coaches and parents.

He said he will be going into rehabilitation for the next few months before starting his preparations for the Asian Games in Indonesia. “Usually there is not a lot of time between Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. But this time there is, so I plan to use this period for proper rehabilitation. Of course the ultimate aim is to win a medal in the Olympics in 2020,” said Satish

09:02 hrs IST: Though confident of his abilities after the snatch section, Satish had to spend a few anxious moments as Oliver made an attempt at 175 kg to overtake Satish. “If he had lifted that, I would have had to go for 176 kg and I was a bit worried how that would have impacted my injury. But he failed to lift 175 and so I did not go for 176,” said Satish after the medal ceremony. Oliver had to be satisfied with silver while Francios Eutoundi of Australia, despite struggling with an injured shoulder, took the bronze with a lift of 305 kg

08:58 hrs IST: However, Sathish steeled himself for a tough competition and despite not having the support of a physiotherapist inside the village and warm-up hall, Sathish bagged India’s third gold medal in weightlifting at the 2018 Commonwealth Games with a commanding performance in men’s 77kg. Having finished second in snatch section after lifting one kilogram less than England’s Jack Oliver, Satish overcame the deficit by heaving 173 kg, a good six kilograms more than the Englishman for a total of 317 kg

07:55 hrs IST: At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Sathish won the gold medal with 149 kg snatch and 179 kg clean and jerk lifts, totalling 328 kg. His lift of 149 kg in snatch continues to be the Games record. He is also the reigning Commonwealth Championships gold medallist
