ALLAHABAD: In a bid to improve safety, the North Central Railway (NCR), for the first time since its inception in the year 2003, has introduced the concept of Gross Happiness Index (GHI) in order to measure the satisfaction level of its running staff with the facilities and services provided in the running rooms.
On the instructions of the NCR, GM, MC Chauhan, this unique innovation would not only boost the morale of its running staff which include loco pilots (LP) and assistant loco pilots (ALP), but pin-point the areas of improvement to the authorities which needs attention.

“As proper rest is extremely important for LP’s and ALP’s as their work is of constant concentration and any lapse in alertness by them can lead to a mishap, the condition of running rooms and the facilities provided in the same become very important in ensuring safety,” said Chauhan. In this backdrop, the introduction of the concept of GHI has been done in order to measure the level of satisfaction in terms of condition and facilities provided in the running rooms.

The GHI would be evaluated over 10 criteria’s which include system of room allotment by the crew lobby, quality of reception, cleanliness and upkeep of the rooms, cleanliness of the toilets, availability of water round the clock, quality of linen and its washing, behaviour of the housekeeping and mess staff, time taken in preparation of food and its quality etc.

GHI would be calculated on a scale of 1 to 10 for each of these parameters. The marks obtained by individual running rooms across these parameters are averaged in order to arrive at the overall GHI for any particular running room, explains CPRO, NCR, GK Bansal.

More than 7 points of the scale would mean excellent grading which would represented with green colour, from 6 to 6.9 means very good (Yellow) and points from 5 to 5.9 would mean good (Blue).
