JALANDHAR: SC wing of Shiromani Akali Dal has demanded that the Union government should bring a bill in
Parliament to strengthen SC/ST Act in case there is no reprieve from
Supreme Court on the next hearing of review petition filed by the Centre.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday SAD SC wing convener Gulzar Singh Ranike and other senior leaders of the Wing said that if needed they would meet the Prime Minister also on the issue.
The SAD leaders also criticised the registration of cases against unidentified Dalit activists for Bharat Bandh protests. They demanded that cases should be withdrawn. However, they fumbled for words when asked that during SAD regime also protestors were routinely booked and several cases were registered against Sikh protestors after Bargari sacrilege case.
Meanwhile former
Akali MLA Justice Nirmal Singh specifically mentioned that he had studied the plight of Dalits in
Gujarat and they faced strong discrimination and atrocities. He also pointed out the plight of dalits in UP and
Rajasthan while arguing that stringent provisions of SC/ST Act should stay.
