The leaders of the Cancer Hospital Sadhana Committee held a protest demonstration at the District Collectorate here on Friday demanding that the government immediately start works on the sanctioned Regional Cancer Centre and Hospital here without further delay.

The Sadhana Committee Convenor H. Dattatreyulu said that the hospital was sanctioned as per a promise made during the Andhra Pradesh State bifurcation but it was unfortunate that no works had begun.

Stating that the Central government gave its approval for this ₹45-cr project in 2015, Mr. Dattatreyulu said that it was sanctioned to extend services to needy patients in Nellore region under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Strokes.

He deplored that there were now reports stating that the project was being shifted out of Nellore.

Mr. Dattatreyulu said that if the project gets set up on the premises of the Government Medical College here, it would be beneficial to the patients in the region.
