Coyotes reward G Raanta with 3-year extension

Antti Raanta has turned a career year with the Arizona Coyotes into a lucrative contract extension.

The fifth-year goalie, who made $1 million this season, received a three-year extension from the club on Friday. Financial terms were not disclosed, but multiple reports have Raanta earning $12.75 million over the life of the deal, which extends through the 2020-21 season.

"When we acquired Antti last summer, we believed that he had the talent and desire to become an elite starting goaltender and he certainly proved that this season," Coyotes general manager John Chayka said in a press release. "You can't be successful in this league without an outstanding No. 1 goaltender and now we have that with Antti."

Raanta had never made more than 26 starts in a season before arriving in Arizona. He has started 45 games this season, posting a 21-16-6 record and 2.24 goals-against average.

Raanta, 28, previously spent two seasons each with the Chicago Blackhawks and the New York Rangers.

"I'm thrilled to sign a new contract with the Coyotes," said Raanta in the release. "The Coyotes believed in me and gave me an opportunity to prove that I could be a starting goaltender in the NHL. I'm very grateful for this and can't wait for next season. We have a great young team here and I'm very excited about our future in Arizona."

In 123 career starts, Raanta is 68-39-15. He was due to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.
