Cleveland Cavaliers rallied hard in the last two quarters after going in at the break almost 30 points down.
However, they fell just short as the 76ers clinched a 132-130 victory.
James made history by becoming the youngest player at the age of 33 to reach 31,000 career points.
Kobe Byrant achieved the feat at 34 and James took 1,141 games to hit the milestone.
Despite admitting disappointment over the result, James thinks that a breakdown in communication with one of his team-mates prevented his side from prevailing.
Me and Jeddy [Cedi Osman] were thinking of the same thing at same time - ‘you go and get it’
“We dug ourself that hole. We’ve got pride and the way we tried to get back into the game was to be more scrappy,” James said.
“We played more physical and made more shots after that, so that’s why we were down 30 before.
“To come back shows what we are capable of doing.

“A missed shot and [J.R. Smith] had a great front of post.
“Me and Jeddy [Cedi Osman] were thinking of the same thing at same time - ‘you go and get it’ and then they get on the break and they got a shot on the buzzer.
“It was tough but we played a good game.”
