CHENNAI: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has inaugurated The Tamil Nadu Digital Library (TNDL), which has over 5,000 e-resources and around 10 lakh bibliographic information that will be helpful for students and teaching faculty. The library, set up at a cost of Rs 186 crore,  provides books, articles, question papers, videos and presentations through the website www.tndigitallibrary.ac.in.
The TNDL is a networking digital library system that stores information about different types of digital contents, including books, articles, videos, audios, theses and other educational materials relevant for users of varying educational levels and capabilities.

It provides a single-window search facility to access the union catalogue of 13 universities in Tamil Nadu.
The TNDL project is all about knowledge dissemination and there is no fee for accessing the digital library. This library has been designed to benefit all kinds of users such as students (of all levels), teachers, researchers, librarians, library users, professionals, persons with disabilities and all other lifelong learners.
This digital library, the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, will provide a single-window search facility to act as a one-stop point for all digital resources available in 13 universities and their affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu. Information can be personalised based on the resource type, subject categories and media of content. This is like a customised service provided in a 24x7 integrated environment to suit a user’s requirement.

There is no restriction on the accessibility of the TNDL system. It can be accessed by an individual or institute member equally well.  However, access to full-text content in many cases (for example, Springer publisher content) may require institutional membership. The Chief Minister also inaugurated new buildings for the Higher Education Department, built at a total cost of `26 crore in various places of the State, through video-conferencing from the Secretariat on Wednesday.
