ALLAHABAD: Buoyed by the its victory in the recently-concluded UP bypoll, the district unit of
Samajwadi Party will undergo a 'image makeover' to expand its base in the
Allahabad North and
Allahabad West segments of the Phulpur parliamentary constituency.
While Allahabad North segment is considered to be a hub of intellectuals, Allahabad West is a Muslim-dominated segment. SP members said that an analysis of the bypoll indicated that despite the party's victory, there was a sharp decline in the voting percentage in majority of the booths in urban area of Allahabad North and Muslim-dominated pockets. The Akhilesh Yadav-led party failed to attract the intellectual class and traders in Allahabad North assembly constituency as at majority of the booths most people voted for
Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate
Kaushlendra Singh Patel.
Media-in-charge of SP's district unit Daan Bahadur 'Madhur' said, "There is a misconception among Muslim voters because of which they still prefer him (Atiq Ahmad). We are re-working on our image so that our party appears as a better option during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections."
