Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg has said the social network would have to charge its users if the site did not use personal data to target adverts.
"Our service depends on your data," the company's chief operating officer said. "We don't have an opt-out at the highest level. That would be a paid product."
The statement, in an interview with NBC, illustrates the social network's conundrum as it grapples with the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal and new laws that require internet companies to give their users more control over personal data.
