BJP chief equates opposition parties to snakes, dogs

In a stinging attack on political rivals, Shah today equated the parties trying to join hands against the to 'snakes, 'mongoose, 'dogs' and 'cats'.

Later, he said his intention was not to equate Opposition parties to animals.

Addressing a rally here, he also asserted that the will not scrap the reservation policy nor allow anyone else to do so.

"The countdown for 2019 (polls) has begun. Attempts are being made for opposition unity.

"When huge floods occur, everything is washed away... Only a 'vatvriksha' (banyan tree) survives and snakes climb onto it, climb on it, cats climb onto it, dogs climb onto it, cheetah climb onto it and lions climb onto it because of the rising waters.

"The flood caused by Modi has made all cats, dogs, snakes and to come together to contest polls," Shah said.

He was apparently referring to the efforts being made by various parties like the TRS, the Trinamool and the TDP to sew up a coalition to take on the Modi-led in the next

Later, addressing a press conference, Shah said, "What I meant was political parties having no ideological similarities are coming together out of fear of Modi."

He was responding to questions over his remarks.

"Snake and have nothing in common. Let me take names: and BSP, Trinamool and Congress, Chandrababu Naidu and Congress, they have nothing in common and no ideological similarities, but are coming together," the said.

During his speech, he asserted that the government would not scrap the reservation policy, nor allow anyone to do so.

He singled out for his stinging attack.

"Rahul baba and some others are saying that we are demolishing reservation for SCs and STs. We are in no way demolishing the reservation (policy)," Shah said.

He went on to add, "Rahul and (Sharad) Pawar, listen. will never end the reservation policy. And even if you want to end the reservation, will never allow it."

The president's remarks came in the backdrop of the recent controversy and agitation after a ruling regarding the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which is seen by many as dilution of the law.

Slamming the president, he said, "When we lost two Lok Sabha seats (in UP) recently, Rahul baba distributed sweets. We only lost the polls, while his party forfeited the deposit. He (Rahul) is the first I have seen who distributed sweets after his party forfeited deposit in the polls."
