Meghalaya govt allocates Rs 1000 cr for education: Sangma

Conrad K today said his government has prioritised and allotted nearly Rs 1000 crore for the sector.

Replying to a debate on the Governor's address, said, "We have allotted nearly Rs 1,000 crore for the sector. But this is not enough as the financial burden in this sector is high."

He said the government has also set up a task force to study the policy and it is expected to submit its report within three months.

The highlighted the need to release salary of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan school teachers which was lying pending for the last 7/8 months was a big task for the new government.

The said 150 schools will be provided with additional classrooms and activity-based aids for the students to help them learn science and mathematics.

"We have to inculcate their love for the subject when they were young," he said, calling on the parents and society to also play their part in this sector.

On the safety of women and children, the chief minister also called on the society at large to change their mindset first and foremost.

Stating that awareness camps and meetings need to be held to ensure that women get their due respect, Sonowal said a number of measures were taken by the government to ensure safety and security to women and children.

He said the government has set up women helpline 181, the anti-human trafficking units in four districts - Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and district - apart from women police stations which were set up in 7 districts.

He also said that proposals for creation of more women police stations in four remaining districts are also under consideration by the government.
