On the second day of the 21st Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast today, there was no stopping the Indian weightlifters. The shuttlers and boxers also continued to be unbeaten.
Weightlifters Sanjita Chanu and Deepak Lather added a gold and bronze to the team's tally today. This raised India's total medal tally to four and earned them fifth place. India's total tally now comprises two gold, one silver and a bronze.
Sanjita Chanu claimed a gold and a Games' snatch record in the 53 kg category, lifting a total of 192 kg. In men's section, Deepak Lather became the youngest Indian weightlifter to claim a CWG medal with his bronze in the 69 kg category. There were several other good results to celebrate for India though, prominent one being the women's hockey team bringing its campaign back on track with a 4-1 thrashing of Malaysia.The Indians continued to be the big bullies of the badminton court, dismantling Scotland today 5-nil in Group A to top their mixed team event group and advance to the quarterfinals.
In the boxing ring, CWG debutants Amit Panghal in 49kg category and Naman Tanwar in 91 kg entered the last eight stage.
On the squash court, Joshna Chinnappa entered the quarterfinals with a 3-nil win over Australia's Tamika Saxby. However, Dipika Pallikal crashed out.
Top Indian cyclist and former Asian gold-medallist Deborah Herold failed to qualify for the quarterfinals in the women's sprint event . Para-swimmer Kiran Tak with a time of 1 minute 46.29 seconds finished seventh and last in the women's 100-meter backstroke event.
Putting up a dismal show, world cup medallist gymnast Aruna Reddy failed to qualify for the final round. However, Pranati Nayak made the cut in vault event of the women's artistic gymnastics.
Australia with a haul of 36 medals, tops the tally followed by England, Canada and Scotland.
On day 3 of the competition tomorrow, India will feature in 10 events, prominent among them being hockey, badminton, boxing, gymnastics, cycling, squash and table tennis. In Hockey, India will take on their archrivals Pakistan.
