I am concerned for the lack of coverage on alternative care for our aging population.

Currently, I am a student at Bridgewater State University, working towards my bachelor’s degree in social work. Part of my educational journey has allowed me the opportunity to intern at Bethany House, an adult day health program located in Taunton. I have witnessed the life changing work this program provides.

With our aging population growing, many caregivers struggle with how they can ensure quality care for their loved ones. This can be especially troubling for caregivers who are still in the workforce. Adult day health programs, senior centers, and other community services can help to alleviate this stress for caregivers and/or the individuals who are aging.

Although there are circumstances that require individuals to reside in long-term facilities, many of our aging individuals are prematurely place in these nursing centers. I have worked in long-term care collectively for over 10 years, so I know there are many caring and dedicated individuals who work in skilled nursing homes. There is an absolute need for these facilities. I just want to state the importance of supporting the elderly within our community. A good way to show support is to educate them and their love ones on the different options available.
