Protesters damage window panes of 15 buses in various parts of the city

The bandh called by the Opposition parties against the delay in constituting the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) threw life out of gear in the city on Thursday as party cadre indulged in stone throwing and resorted to road and rail roko.

Shops were shut from early morning.

MTC officials said the window panes of 15 buses were damaged in various parts of the city such as Vepery, Doveton, Poonamallee, Anna Square and Red Hills. No major incident was reported.

Tension prevailed at the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus in Koyambedu when protesters blocked the buses and climbed on the roof. However, the police arrested them.

S. Manohar, a resident of Guindy, said he could not reach office on time on his two-wheeler though the road was empty, thanks to the protesters blocking Anna Salai. CPI (M) cadre led by State secretary K. Balakrishnan protested on the railway track near Park Station.

Southern Railway officials said suburban train services were affected after protesters blocked trains at the Avadi and Park stations. Six suburban trains at the Avadi station and two at the Park station were delayed for about 10 minutes.

Members of Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Association across the State wore black badges to work.
