WATCH: 'Max Price exploits us!' – Chumani Maxwele hauled off UCT graduation stage

06 April, 08:39 PM

A graduation ceremony at the University of Cape Town was halted briefly on Friday after student activist Chumani Maxwele caused a stir.

As vice-chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng was about to cap Maxwele, he started chanting repeatedly "Max Price exploits us!"

Price is the former vice-chancellor of UCT.

Maxwele continued until he was ushered off the stage.

Maxwele made national headlines in 2015 when he threw faeces on the university's Cecil John Rhodes statue, starting a national debate about post-apartheid racial transformation in South Africa.

Maxwele's action also became a catalyst for national student activism, namely the #RhodesMustFall and #FeesMustFall movements.
