Trees and poles fall, power supply disrupted in several areas

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder showers lashed the city on Friday evening throwing normal life out of gear.

Areas that received heavy rainfall included Qutbullahpur, Malkajgiri, Musheerabad, Begumpet, Khairtabad, Goshamahal, Karwan and Yousufguda.

Weathermen confirmed hail at about three places including Bowenpally, Thrimulgherry and Begumpet. However, other areas too reported hail. Till 9 pm, the Gaanaka Bhavan met station in Khairatabad recorded the highest rainfall of 52.5 mm.

Power supply was interrupted in several areas such as Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Moghalpura and parts of Azampura.

The GHMC said that its personnel attended to tree branches and uprooted poles. By 9.30 pm, as many as nine tree were reported to have fallen. In two separate cases, uprooted trees fell on cars. While the first incident was reported in Panjagutta, the other was in Vengalrao Nagar. Water logging was reported at several places. An iron scaffolding at Model House in Panjagutta collapsed. GHMC officials were coordinating with TSSPDCL personnel to remove it from the carriageway.

In view of the gusts of wind, the GHMC reiterated its set of precautionary measures for advertising agencies which included steps taken for the safety of structures like the unipole. The Corporation directed the agencies to remove torn flexis immediately.
