Institution director urges faculty, students to take up more research to bag top position in the country

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) has bagged the first rank among the government medical institutions in south India.

In a press release, Vishnu Bhat, Director, Jipmer, said that the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has ranked Jipmer No.1 among medical institutions in south India and fourth in the country. “Overall (including private medical institutions), Jipmer has been ranked sixth in the country. The NIRF ranking is done by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development.

NIRF Nodal Officer in Jipmer, Ravi Kumar Chittoria, said that the declaration of rankings was done by Union Minister of HRD Prakash Javadekar at a function held in Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. NIRF ranking was started in 2016 and this year for the first time medical and dental colleges were also ranked. The rankings assume significance as performance of institutions has been linked with ‘Institutions of Eminence’ scheme.

‘Promotes competition’

“Ranking promotes competition among the universities and drive them to strive for excellence. The government has also started a scheme called ‘Institutions of Eminence’ in which 20 institutions — both public and private — will be selected on challenge method and they will receive active support to come up the global rankings,” he said.

He added that in NIRF, to promote research and development in higher education, ‘Research and Professional Practices’ has been given the highest weightage of 40% for ranking universities. The number of institutions participating in the rankings has risen by over 1,000 this year. According to sources from the National Board of Accreditation, apart from the government institutions, a large number of private institutions joined this year. The ranking takes into consideration various parameters such as research activities, publications, academics, financial status, etc.

On this occasion, Dr. Bhat requested faculty and students of Jipmer to get actively involved in research to bag the number 1 rank in the country.
