new world record
Goal Coast: Australia's 4x100-meter women's freestyle relay team has done it again, breaking its own world record on the opening night of the swim program at the Commonwealth Games.
Australia, with sisters Bronte and Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon and Shayna Jack, clocked a time of 3 minutes, 30.5 seconds Thursday night at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre. That broke the mark of 3:30.65 the team clocked at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, when the Campbell sisters and McKeon were part of the team. On Thursday, Canada finished second, nearly four seconds behind. England took the bronze, more than eight seconds behind Australia.
teenage success
Goal Coast: Eleven-year-old table tennis prodigy Anna Hursey made her mark at the Commonwealth Games as she helped pull off a hard-fought doubles win for Wales on Thursday.
The schoolgirl, the youngest athlete at these Games and thought to be the youngest in the competition's history, partnered with Charlotte Carey in the women's team event. Carey and Hursey were 2-0 up against India's Madhurika Patkar and Mouma Das before being pegged back to 2-2, but they grittily won the last game 13-11 to seal the match.
Although it was Wales's lone success, as India won the three singles matches to take the tie 3-1, it was an important step forward for Hursey.
Standing just 1.60 metres (5ft 3in) tall, the Cardiff schoolgirl is known as a tenacious competitor, having already broken records by appearing at last year's European championships. "She's taking it in her stride really," Welsh coach Stephen Jenkins said. "She is actually really mature for her age. It's just inside her -- she's mentally strong."
pearson pulls out
gold coast: Poster-girl Sally Pearson pulled out of the Commonwealth Games on Thursday after failing to recover from an Achilles problem, dealing a heavy blow to the event. Australia's Pearson, the 100 metres hurdles world champion, said she was "disappointed" but added that she needed to give herself the best chance of competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Gold Coast resident and former Olympic champion, 31, has been troubled by an Achilles problem but said it "spiked very quickly" two days ago. She said she waited before making her announcement as she is the face of the Games, playing a prominent role in opening ceremony.
