Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena today said that a cabinet reshuffle will happen in a few days. Addressing local media heads in Colombo, the President called upon any parliamentarian to strengthen the government adding that a committee will also be appointed from both parties to discuss the future progress of the government.
His comments came in wake of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe victory at no-confidence motion on Wednesday during which several ministers of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) led by President voted for the motion.
Prime minister’s United National Party (UNP) has demanded the removal of these ministers from the cabinet. However, the SLFP ministers have maintained that they can only be removed by President. A total of 16 SLFP ministers and MPs voted to support the motion while 23 abstained. The division within the President’s group is said to be a setback for Mr Sirisena whose party was already divided between him and former President Mahinda Rajapakse.
Mr Rajapakse group had made a political comeback during local body elections held in February which has led to the political crisis within the country. A cabinet reshuffle of UNP ministers was carried out on February 25th but no changes were made to SLFP minister portfolios.
