Mondel Johnson attacked a woman, doused her with a fluid and set the house on fire

WAREHAM — A 40-year-old man arrested in Fall River is charged with setting a fire that destroyed a home last week in the Shangri-Lane section of East Wareham, police said.

The suspect, Mondel Johnson of 18 Barker Road, East Wareham, attacked a woman inside the home at 36 Restful Lane, doused her with a fluid and set the house on fire, according to a news release from the Wareham Police Department.

The unidentified woman escaped the fire when she ran to a nearby residence, police said. She was later treated and released from Tobey Hospital.

Johnson was arrested Thursday evening in Fall River and charged with attempted murder, arson of a dwelling house and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, police said. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Wareham District Court.

The residence at 36 Restful Lane suffered heavy fire damage on March 29, which caused its structural collapse, according to the Wareham Fire Department. The building was a two-story, wood frame structure, measuring about 24 feet by 30 feet. The house suffered about $300,000 in damage.

The fire was reported at 2:59 a.m. and firefighters remained at the scene for most of that morning, extinguishing the fire and then putting out hot spots.

Wareham police, state police detectives assigned to the state Fire Marshal’s office and the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section as well as police from the Fall River and New Bedford police departments made the arrest, police said.

Wareham police expressed their appreciation for the cooperation from several police agencies in the investigation of the fire and the arrest.
