Former Raiders P King cites 'revenge' in agreeing with Broncos
The Denver Broncos and free-agent punter Marquette King agreed to terms on a three-year contract Thursday.
The deal is worth $7 million, according to multiple reports. King hit the open market when the Oakland Raiders surprisingly released him last week after five successful seasons with the team.
"I didn't get an exact reason, but it's all good," King told reporters when asked if the Raiders told him why he was being released. "Looking forward to seeing what I can do with Broncos.
"I just wanted to find the best place that I thought I would fit. I think there is somewhat of a revenge factor in their too. It's a mixture of some of everything."
King averaged 46.8 yards in five full seasons as Oakland's punter. He placed 156 punts inside the 20-yard line against 33 touchbacks.
King finished with a career-high 42.7-yard net average to rank third in the NFL last season. He was named second-team All-Pro when he posted the second-highest punting average (48.6) in the league in 2016.
King visited with the Broncos earlier Thursday. The 29-year-old, known for his celebrations after punting, said he's looking forward to playing in the environment Denver fosters.
"The cool thing about the Broncos is the people that work at the Broncos encourage you to be yourself," King said. "That is real cool. Players play a lot better when they can let their hair down and be themselves. It's cool. They encourage it.
"I'm still going to have fun. I'm still going to dance and still celebrate. I'm going to be me. Nothing is going to stop me from being me."
