Thane: An injured kite stuck on a tree branch 100 feet above the ground for hours was brought down after a 30-minute rescue operation on Thursday morning. The bird was stuck on the tree alongside the service road off Ghodbunder Road near the Majiwada parking centre. Morning walkers in the vicinity spotted the bird and alerted the Balkum fire station and civic regional disaster management cell.
R N Pawar, sub fire officer, said, “As soon as we got a call about the bird, we reached the spot with a rescue vehicle. Soon, a couple of our team members realized that the bird was not in a position to move even an inch as its legs were entangled in a nylon net. With the help of a turn table ladder we were able to bring the bird down in about 30 minutes. Usually in such cases, the bird is later sent to an animal hospital or an emergency center. But before we could wrap it up properly, it fled away within minutes. So, perhaps the bird was fine after all and the minor injuries it sustained did not hamper its flight.”
As there is a possibility of many dehydration cases among birds during the sweltering heat because of which they may take shelter on a tree, animal activists have urged citizens to immediately alert officials about such instances so that timely action can be taken.
