Teen Rejects Plea Deal For 25 Years In Prison, Gets 65 Years Instead

An Alabama teenager being tried as an adult has been sentenced to 65 years in prison after turning down a plea deal for 25 years.????18-year-old Lakeith Smith was convicted of felony murder, burglary, and theft under Alabama’s accomplice liability law.

In 2015, a group of five broke into two homes just north of Montgomery, resulting in an exchange of shots with police.????Smith actually didn’t kill anyone, police did, fatally shooting 16-year-old A-Donte Washington, who was one of the 5 involved in the stand-off.

But because of Alabama’s accomplice liability law, Smith was accused of being criminally responsible for the acts leading to Washington’s death, according to USA Today.????As the only defendant of four who pleaded not guilty, Smith reportedly laughed as he received his sentencing.????Commenting on the sentencing, CJ Robinson, the chief assistant district attorney said, “I don’t think Mr.

Smith will be smiling long when he gets to prison.

Because the sentences are consecutive, it will be a long time before he comes up for even the possibility for parole, at least 20 to 25 years.”
