Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs assistant undersecretary Khalid Al Haj said the ministry is now fully prepared to embrace the First Arab Conference on Sport with the slogan "The Role of Sport in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals", on April 10 and 11.

The two-day conference will take place at Art Rotana Amwajj Hotel in Muharraq and is brought in cooperation with the United Nations Office in Bahrain and the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Sports and Recreation (ICHPER.SD).

Al Haj emphasized the role of sport as a major pillar for any nation wishing to apply its developmental programmes through the youth, and pointed out that the kingdom of Bahrain hosting this first-of-its kind regional conference underlines its belief in the abilities of its youth to play a major part in the progression of the society.

The ministry’s assistant undersecretary noted that they have put the finishing touches on all arrangements in preparation to bring the conference into reality, and noted that such an event represents an opportunity for the country to promote itself in hosting major international sport and youth activities.

"We are keen to prepare an ideal environment for the conference as we welcome our guests from around the region, and we hope that the outcomes will meet the desired objectives as lots of communities rely on the youth and sports factors, which are important in this regard," said Al Haj.

On his part, ministry’s Director of Institutional Development Abdulreda Al Mosawi said the conference will focus on the importance of sport and its contribution in achieving the 17 sustainable development goals set by the United Nations, and way to fulfill them in the next 15 years.

Al Mosawi said those 17 goals will be presented through four themes by speakers from all over the world, including Italy, Great Britain, Egypt, the GCC, the United Nations and United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

Meanwhile, Art Rotana Amwaj Hotel has prepared its venue to welcome more than 200 participants from different Arab nations. 12 countries have already confirmed its participation, namely Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania and host country Bahrain.

Public Relations Committee director Ahmed Janahi said the arrangements related to accommodation of delegations have already been made prior to their arrival, and noted that the standing committees have stepped up their coordination and follow up process with relevant authorities to finalise their preparations.

In another development, the organising committee has appointed renowned media personnel Fawaz Abdulla and Maryam Abulfateh to manage the sessions over the two days of the conference.
