WEEE Malta has finally started to clear the accumulated backlog of electronic waste which has been clogging up the civic amenity sites.

The company, which represents 380 importers of electronic and electrical goods, said it had spent months negotiating with the government waste management agency, Wasteserv.

WEEE Malta will now be removing 500 tonnes of waste, mostly fridges, freezers and TV sets from the civic amenity sites, and in accordance with the proportion that its members had placed on the market.

In 2017, WEEE Malta collected around 1,000 tonnes for recycling overseas, as there is no plant available in Malta to deal with this type of waste.
