Southwest Airlines March load factor increases, as traffic growth outpaces capacity

Southwest Airlines Co. LUV, +0.89% reported Friday March load factor that rose to a record for the month, as growth in the demand for seats outpaced the increase in supply. Traffic for the month increased 3.7% to 11.7 billion revenue passenger miles (RPMs), while capacity rose 2.4% to 13.8 billion available seat miles (ASMs), lifting the load factor to 85.1% from 84.1%. For the first quarter, load factor increased to 81.5% from 79.9%, beating the FactSet consensus of 81.0%, as RPM growth of 3.7% outpaced ASM growth of 1.8%. Separately, the air carrier said in its proxy statement that Chief Executive Gary Kelly received $7.56 million in total compensation in 2017, which was about 93.1 times that the median pay of the company's employees. The stock, which was still inactive in premarket trade, has tumbled 11.6% over the past three months, while the NYSE Arca Airline Index XAL, +1.00% has gained 1.3% and the S&P 500 SPX, +0.69% has slipped 2.9%.
