PATIALA: Seeking a ban on the controversial movie 'Nanak Shah Fakir' the students of Punjabi University on Friday staged a protest in front of the university gate with banners opposing the film.

The students also took out a march inside the university campus .

The protesters alleged that presenting to the Sikhs first guru (mentor) Guru Nanak and his family members has hurt the Sikh sentiments. They claimed that it was against the principles of the Sikhism to present the Sikh Gurus in form of humans or idols or in graphics and playing a role either on or off the screen as this may prove a spiritual suicide by the Sikhs.

“The film is meant to target the principles of Sikhism by promoting idolism. The Sikhs have nothing to do with idol worship as they do not believe in it rather the Sikh Gurus have challenged it. Mahatma Budh was the first one to oppose the it but nowadays a large number of idols of Mahatma Budh are present and can be seen in our society. The screening of the controversial movie should be banned immediately”, said PhD scholar Simarjit Singh.
