Ever since the election date was announced, politicians have been actively drawing up schedules for riproaring rallies, mandatory constituency visits and timely social media push .

Interestingly, an offbeat task has also made it to their to-do lists – wardrobe shopping. With Modi Jacket and Modi Kurta making global waves, ‘neta’ fashion has trickled down to namma state as well. Some of our top politicos, apparently, are busy refreshing their wardrobes to add ministerial panache to the electoral fever this summer. They are approaching fashion designers, local weavers and branded stores to get the right look.

Menswear designer Paresh Lamba, known for curating wardrobes of political circles, has seen a sudden jump in the number of walk-ins since the election date was announced. “Since March, I have been receiving 3-4 walk-ins every day.

Politicians, especially youngsters, want to replenish their wardrobes. All have placed a minimum order of six sets of kurta-pyjamas or shirt-trousers,” says Lamba.

His political clients have been experimenting with sleeves, pockets and epaulettes on shirts and kurtas in fine Italian and Irish linen. New colour stories like sky blue, peach and fawn are trending beyond staple white.

“Each successive election, the style quotient goes up. Like a movie star who promotes his film, a politician is marketing live for his party and self. Moreover, social media is creating an aura for them. So, being presentable is key,” adds Lamba.

Fashion designer Manoviraj Khosla is also busy designing trendy looks. “Today, politicians want fine design details on their shirts and kurtas. It could be a design on the collar, a play with pockets, or their initials on the cuffs,” says Khosla. The brief is to make them project a sharp yet nonexpensive appearance.
